This first Austrian post-war film was made under precarious conditions, in which returnees are portrayed as key figures in the reconstruction process - overcoming both geographical and emotional distances. Their gaze is directed forwards, questions about the past remain unanswered. The ‘honest realism’ demanded by politicians is fulfilled in the shots of destroyed Vienna and the visibly emaciated actors.
