Der weiße Ballon (35mm)
**Part of the Special Series: LICHTSPIELE**
Little Razieh lives in Tehran and dreams of nothing more than owning a goldfish, a traditional part of the Iranian New Year celebration on March 21. She and her brother plead with their mother until she finally gives in, handing them her last bit of money to go to the pet shop. But on the way there, Razieh loses the banknote. Desperately trying to recover it, she encounters smugglers, snake charmers, and a mysterious balloon seller...
This debut film by Iranian director Jafar Panahi, awarded multiple times at Cannes in 1995, is emblematic of the new wave of Iranian auteur cinema. Carefully crafted in long takes, the film captivates with the charm of its story, its subtle observational details, and its profoundly human message. The screenplay was written by Abbas Kiarostami, Iran's most internationally renowned filmmaker, under whom Panahi once worked as an assistant director.
