Der unbekannte “Anschluss”: Neu entdeckte Amateurfilme von März 1938

Year1938

For the years of the Nazi dictatorship, amateur films are de facto the only unfiltered sources and therefore also relevant ‘counter-images’ to the official propagandistic film reports. Particularly impressive are the numerous private recordings of the events in March 1938, which the Filmarchiv Austria was able to collect as part of the major film searches in Lower Austria, Salzburg, Styria and Carinthia. These previously unknown film documents show candid, often incidental snapshots of public life surrounding the Anschluss and provide an authentic view of the events.

As part of the Fascination of Film Archiving series, the Filmarchiv Austria is presenting a selection of these amateur films from various federal states, which have now been digitised in high resolution. The films reveal irritating moments in history and the enthusiasm of the population, which at times took on almost manic proportions.
