Every morning the alarm clock rings at six o'clock, then the news, breakfast, the journey to school and work, monotony until the end of the working day, shopping, dinner, television, sleep - for years the routine and unspectacular everyday life of a middle-class family in Linz, which they have now internalised to such an extent that the only way out is suicide. With the same precision, they destroy what they have destroyed over the years: their social network, their possessions, their existence - until in the end there is nothing left. Michael Haneke was inspired by a similar case for his cinema debut, which is also the prelude to the "trilogy of emotional glaciation", and draws a treatise on the "horror of reality" in sober images.
