Der schöne Tag
A summer day in Berlin. Twenty-one-year-old Deniz (Serpil Turhan) is constantly on the move, determined and searching at the same time, travelling by underground, suburban railway, taxi or on foot. The extensively depicted journeys through the city – southern Friedrichstadt, Wannsee, Bahnhof Zoo, Tiergarten – give this final part of the Berlin trilogy a rhythm all its own. Deniz breaks up with her boyfriend, meets her mother and sister, and gets to know a young man along the way. Reflections on love accompany her. In the dubbing studio, she narrates Éric Rohmer's film Conte d'été (Summer, 1996); at a casting, she soberly and intensely recounts a scene from Maurice Pialat's À nos amours (To Our Loves, 1983); in conversation with a scientist, she discusses the cultural history of love. All these different ways of speaking and references make the film, shot with natural light and original sound, a space for reflection. (B.K.)
