Der Sammler und die Sammlerin
"Glaneurs" was the name given to women who collected what was left over from the harvest in the fields - individual ears of corn, potatoes, corncobs. Agnès Varda is also a "glaneuse", a collector of images that she found along France's roads and "collected" with her digital camera.
Fascinated by François Millet's painting "The Potato Pickers", Varda filmed people who, out of necessity, passion or simply by chance, pick up things that others have thrown away. The result is an image of a throwaway society that is as political as it is poetic.
