"The characteristic of all my films is the fight against fate. The important thing is the fight, not fate." In this film, a young woman is given the chance to wrest the life of her deceased lover from death. To do so, she has to save a life in three different places and at three different times. Her odyssey takes her to the Orient, Venice and faraway China - but her chances dwindle from time to time ... Even here, the penchant for opulence that characterises Lang's upcoming "big films" shines through. But despite all the splendour, the Harbou/Lang team succeed in creating something that goes beyond the visual narrative level: a coherent reflection on the traumas of the First World War and the irrepressible urge of people to survive. A favourite film by Luis Buñuel.
