Der Junge im gestreiften Pyjama

FromMark Herman

WithDavid Thewlis, Vera Farmiga, Rupert Friend, Asa Butterfield, Jack Scanlon

Year2008

Duration94min.

In his novel ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’, John Boyne tells the story of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the camp commandant of a concentration camp, and Shmuel, who is the same age and imprisoned in the camp. The two become friends at the wire mesh fence and Shmuel explains to Bruno what is really happening in the camp and what Bruno's father is hiding. Together, the two set off in search of Shmuel's missing father in the camp.

A fictionalised story, but one that recalls the terrible historical reality from the child's perspective. In his adaptation of John Boyne's novel, Mark Herman portrays his protagonists carefully, unspectacularly and attentively - and makes a much-noticed contribution to the discussion about the depiction of the Holocaust in film.
