Der Herr Karl

FromErich Neuberg

WithHelmut Qualtinger

Year1961

Duration59min.

LanguageGerman

Even as DER HERR KARL flickers across Austrian television screens on the evening of November 15, 1961, the phones at ORF are ringing off the hook: a flood of angry viewer protests pours in not only to the broadcaster, but also dominates the letters to the editor columns of daily newspapers in the form of nasty insults and even anonymous death threats. The nearly hour-long monologue, performed by the popular actor and cabaret artist Helmut Qualtinger, combines history and social studies lessons and holds up a mirror to the country while stepping on its toes: kowtowing to those above, kicking those below, and always denying any responsibility with a whiny, innocent expression. Today a cult classic and still relevant: opportunism made in Austria.
