DER HELD VOM BAHNHOF FRIEDRICHSTRASSE tells the story of Micha Hartung (Charly Hübner), a Berlin video store owner on the brink of bankruptcy who unwittingly becomes a hero throughout Germany. When a journalist stylises him as the mastermind behind the largest mass escape from the GDR on the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, his life is suddenly turned upside down. As an unwitting impostor, Micha becomes entangled in a web of half-truths and outright lies.

And when the fragile house of cards surrounding his story threatens to collapse and his life descends into chaos, he meets Paula (Christiane Paul). Micha would never have believed that a successful, intelligent and funny woman like her could be interested in a man like him. But the budding love story is overshadowed by lies.

A heart-warming comedy about history as myth, the pitfalls of German memory culture and life as a game of remembering, forgetting and inventing. An entertaining lesson on the hierarchy of historiography and a film about the power of storytelling.

Wolfgang Becker passed away on 12 December 2024, shortly after filming was completed. Exactly one year after his death, we honour the successful director, who made cinema history with ‘Good Bye, Lenin!’, with the theatrical release of his last film, DER HELD VOM BAHNHOF FRIEDRICHSTRASSE (The Hero of Friedrichstrasse Station), which his artistic companions, director Achim von Borries and producer Stefan Arndt, completed in Wolfgang Becker's spirit.
