Rita has big plans with her boyfriend, the chemist Manfred. But everyday problems put their relationship to the test. Manfred feels overlooked, especially at work, and subsequently moves to West Berlin. When Rita visits him there, they both realise that a rift has formed not only in their relationship, but also in Germany. A rift that soon manifests itself in the form of the Berlin Wall... Holding up a mirror to GDR society in the form of a critical assessment, always in the hope of changing the political situation for the better: with artfully staggered flashbacks, flowing transitions and surrealistic refractions, the film is aesthetically close to the French Nouvelle Vague and is considered one of the most ambitious and at the same time most critical DEFA productions ever.
