Deadline/War Zone (Todeszone)
Between reports from the Paris fashion shows and news about the civil war in Lebanon, photojournalist Don Stevens (Christopher Walken) has enough contrast to deal with in the face of a highly chaotic situation. The pressure and competition among reporters from international networks for ratings-boosting images of death and suffering leads him into the turmoil of an almost impenetrable jungle of information. The failure of a journalist under these conditions shows parallels to Volker Schlöndorff's The Counterfeiters (1981) and highlights the thin line between fact and even unintentional fake news, as well as between sober reporting and activism. The topicality of the subject matter and the protagonists brings home to us the problems and complexity of this region, which have dominated the news for decades. (G.S.)
