Georg Marischka's last directorial work - as well as his masterpiece. DAS VERMÄCHTNIS DES INKA cannot be compared with any other Karl May adaptation, starting with the fact that the story of an attempted coup to re-establish the Inca monarchy was also shot in Peru, which lends the film a rare touch of authenticity. Also noteworthy is the colour work, which tends to be slightly stylised, the extreme clarity of the images and the unusually physical acting of the actors by German cinema standards. The film became a box office disaster - which for Franz Marischka, who had produced it with his own funds as a kind of gift for his career-frustrated stepbrother, probably meant that from then on he worked mainly for the bank - and a lot of it.
