THE SEVENTH SEAL plays, against the backdrop of a Middle Ages poisoned by the plague and its ideologies, with archaic notions of God, the Devil, and above all Death—who appears in person.

In the mid-14th century, the knight Antonius Block returns to plague-stricken Sweden after a crusade. There, he is already awaited by Death, who has come to claim him. But Block is not willing to die without having understood the meaning of life. He persuades the Grim Reaper to play a game. Death grants him a reprieve: for the duration of a chess match, Block is allowed to search for God…

Ingmar Bergman’s masterpiece, starring Max von Sydow and awarded, among other honors, the Jury Special Prize at the Cannes International Film Festival, was his second major artistic and commercial success after Smiles of a Summer Night (1955) and brought him international recognition. The title is taken from a biblical passage in the Book of Revelation dealing with the Last Judgment:

“And when the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. And the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to sound them.”
