The only television production in the series dates from the most productive period of public broadcasting and is based on the visionary story The Prize of Peril (1958) by American author Robert Sheckley, who had already published a related story in 1953. Yves Boisset's Le Prix du danger builds on this material, in which a ‘representative of the people’ fights for money or death. Wolfgang Menge wrote the screenplay, and director Tom Toelle adapted it for WDR with TV stars, supported by the sound of the group Can. The reactions after the broadcast, in which the supposed authenticity was largely believed, ranged from outrage to enthusiasm, culminating in hundreds of applications for the show. Due to problems with the film rights, the cult film about reality TV remained unseen for more than 30 years. The malicious showmaster, brilliantly played by Dieter Thomas Heck, said after the run through the death spiral: ‘Ladies and gentlemen, what would a hunt be without hunters.’ (G.S.)
