If you want to understand the fascination of wine, the Spanish region of Rioja is the perfect place. People have been living and working among the vineyards here since the Roman Empire. THE COUNTRY OF A THOUSAND WINES accompanies them and shows the diverse ways of life that are reflected in their wines. Director and cultural historian José Luis López-Linares tells the story of winegrowers whose families have been cultivating the vineyards for centuries, of the women's collective that endeavours to produce and market the wines in a spirit of solidarity and of the star chef who is looking for the perfect drink to accompany his meal.
