Das Kind der Donau
A Danube landscape with a ship passing by and a Wachau girl waving to the captain with a washing basket under her arm - DAS KIND DER DONAU begins with these cliché images: the first Austrian feature film in colour, long unseen, almost forgotten and, after FRAUEN SIND DOCH BESSERE DIPLOMATEN (1939), already the second first colour feature film by Jacoby with wife Marika Rökk as the unstoppable good-humoured top whirling through the picture in the leading role. It is about love, closeness to nature, music and the dream of a ‘new kind’ of art that is orientated towards people's lives, but which - as the names of the participants alone suggest - remains a distant utopia. Instead: A revival of the old UFA style in the colourful décor of the Rosenhügel studios.
