Karli (12) moves with his family to the Alps, where his parents finally fulfil their dream of owning their own hotel.

During his explorations of the former grand hotel, he discovers that he can travel through time in an old freight lift – and ends up in 1938! There, Karli befriends Hannah, a Jewish guest, and Georg, a shoe shine boy. But Karli doesn't dare tell his friends what he learns about the year 1938 and why it is vital that Hannah does not return to Berlin.
