The dilapidated spaceship Dark Star has been travelling for 20 years, blowing up unstable planets to secure future colonies. The captain was killed in a short circuit of the broken systems and is lying on ice. The remaining four crew members have succumbed to space madness, oscillating between lethargy and insanity. And somewhere, the alien mascot in the form of a water ball is also haunting the ship... John Carpenter's student film debut, expanded for cinema release, was concocted with Alien writer Dan O'Bannon. In low-budget guerrilla style, it dismantles the grandeur that has made science fiction cinema a space for philosophical odysseys since Kubrick's 2001: Here, only talking bombs philosophise, while in the afterlife, people are mainly interested in baseball scores. The calling card of a great stylist and a subversive flash of light: absurd rebellion of human eccentricity in the cold emptiness of space. (C.H.)
