Dark Habits
With a pre-recorded introduction to the work by curator Chema González (Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid).
After her boyfriend dies of an overdose, drug addict Yolanda seeks refuge in a convent. However, the nuns at this religious institution display extremely unconventional behavior. LSD trips, a full-grown tiger, smuggled trashy novels and a mother superior who falls hopelessly in love with her are the least of Yolanda's problems. Since the monastery's generous patron has died, the Mother Superior seems to be using any means necessary to ensure the continued existence of her convent.
Almodóvar's third feature film is a prime example of the Movida Madrileña: unlike SISTER ACT, which was released around 10 years later and is much more family-friendly despite the similarities in content, DARK HABITS is an untamed and extremely enjoyable journey into a new Spain after the end of Franco's dictatorship.
