An unleashed, weightless action comedy set in the turmoil following the fall of the Qing dynasty. In 1913, a general's daughter secretly supports the revolutionaries in their attempt to steal a crucial document from her father. Her paths cross with those of an opera director's daughter, who wants to join the all-male troupe, and those of a travelling musician chasing jewels. Tsui Hark stages the collision of theatre and politics, including gender confusion (as well as art and life), as a high-speed collision of animated slapstick farce and bloody espionage melodrama. In fluidly edited fragments of movement, he celebrates the kinetics of cinema and sings the hymn of all the art of illusion, including a respectful reverence for the traditions of entertainment, art and popular mythology - but with barbs: Tsui allows his heroines a triumph that history will undo.
