Dancer in the Dark
1960s USA: Czech immigrant Selma struggles with a hereditary eye disease that will soon leave her blind. She works tirelessly in a metal factory to finance her son's operation. She finds solace in her imagination, where she escapes into musicals. After she loses her job, her neighbor Bill, who is in debt, steals her savings. An argument escalates and Bill dies. Selma is accused of murder and sentenced to death. She accepts her fate in order to secure the operation for her son. Lars von Trier vividly shows the inhumanity of the death penalty.
