Two very different families are invited by their respective heads to spend a holiday together. So the Castelvecchios, cosmopolitan, eccentric and a little haughty, and the Petegnas, from a working-class background and with a rather conservative world view, gather in the same luxurious house on the beach. Why, they ask themselves, are we here? When Tony and Carlo, the heads of the family, reveal to the astonished to horrified members of their families that they have been invited to celebrate Tony and Carlo's engagement, the almost normal summer seems to be over for everyone else present.
