Coraline
Before that:
Rex the Runt - Sleep [Dreams] Richard Starzak, GB 1992, 35mm, color, 2 min. English
After moving house, eleven-year-old Coraline discovers a door to a parallel world in her new room: like Alice in Wonderland, only a little more sinister in terms of the surreal effects. On the other side, people with buttons instead of eyes live and pamper Coraline, for whom life in the fantasy world literally becomes a circus (the enraptured audience of Scottish terriers is one of the most delightful sights in recent animated cinema). But one night she is unable to return from the dreamlike fantasy world to boring reality - paradise turns out to be a diabolical trap ... Director Henry Selick rose to fame with Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline is the puppet animation specialist's masterpiece: an atmospheric horror tale with quirky humor that doesn't let the creepy and grotesque smooth over. Before that, an equally surreal dream miniature about the flat dog Rex from Aardman Animations. (C.H.)
