Comrade X
Moscow correspondent Mac Thompson secretly sends explosive reports to the USA under the pseudonym Comrade X. But his hotel valet Vanya finds out about him and blackmails him: either Thompson takes Vanya's daughter Golubka, a fervent communist, out of the country - or the secret police find out about his activities. The journalist is forced to pose as a communist and wins Golubka's favour ...
Often dismissed by film historians as a mere imitation of Ninotchka (no great surprise given the many overlaps in front of and behind the camera), it is nevertheless worth taking a closer look: While the model is directed against the autocracy of the Soviet Union during the Hitler-Stalin pact, COMRADE X is committed to the anti-authoritarian spirit of Weimar cinema.
