During the reconstruction of Poland, the talented composer Wiktor is in search of traditional melodies for a new dance and music ensemble. He wants to breathe new life into the cultural life of his country. Among his students is the singer Zula, who electrifies Wiktor from the very first moment. Beautiful, captivating and full of energy, Zula soon becomes the centre of the ensemble and the two fall in love. Their burning passion seems to know no bounds. But when the ensemble's repertoire becomes increasingly politicised, Wiktor uses a performance in East Berlin to flee to the West. Zula stays away from the arranged escape and yet fate brings the two lovers together again years later. Wiktor meets Zula in Paris, but their love is so ardent that the couple is torn apart and Zula has to make a profound decision. Between home and exile, between passion and loss, France, Yugoslavia and Poland are the settings for the fatal love of a couple who, against the backdrop of the Cold War, cannot live without each other and find almost no peace with each other.
