Cœur fidèle
Epstein's first masterpiece, a melodrama in which the two seemingly contradictory main strands of his cinema intertwine – a willingness to engage in sophisticated, often spectacular formal experimentation and an interest in simple, detailed descriptions of everyday life. The story was shot on location in Marseille and Manosque and unfolds in a captivating blend of realistic and dreamlike atmospheres: two men, an honest dockworker and a flattering crook, fight over a barmaid. The speed-intoxicated scene at the fairground caused a particular stir, in which Epstein, as already announced in his cinema manifesto Bonjour Cinéma, strapped the camera to the carousel: "The fairground would gradually become more and more indistinct. The centrifugal force would visually intensify the drama – thanks to the ‘photogenic’ qualities of dizziness and whirling." (C.H.)
