Cœur de gueux
A restrained yet moving melodrama set against the backdrop of circus life and itinerant existence. It is based on the silent film of the same name by Alfred Machin and Henry Wulschleger from 1925. A young woman is seduced and abandoned, whereupon she joins a troupe of travelling showmen. Epstein co-wrote the dialogue, but remains true to his sensibility from the silent film era, which also retains a modern touch: the social drama of the original film is enriched by the director's penchant for visual poetry. Cœur de gueux is clearly one of Epstein's commercial projects and follows the rules of melodrama, but the boundaries of the genre are transcended by Epstein's masterful precision in storytelling and the emotional power presented with understatement. Although the filmmaker refrains from visual experimentation here, his humanism and fascination with outsiders are all the more prominent. (J.-M.G.)
