Kansas City during Prohibition: taciturn police officer Speer (Clint Eastwood) and talkative detective Murphy (Burt Reynolds) used to be colleagues, but have now become rivals – including for the affections of Murphy's secretary Addy (Jane Alexander). After Murphy's partner is murdered, the unlikely duo join forces to take on the local gangsters. City Heat was originally called Kansas City Jazz and was a passion project of comedy genius Blake Edwards, who was fired shortly before filming began. The result failed to meet the high commercial expectations for the first (and only) collaboration between superstars Eastwood and Reynolds and was labelled a flop. The fabulous cast and the curious mixture of tongue-in-cheek gangster satire and hard action in period costume invite a reassessment. We are showing a virtually unplayed film copy! (C.H.)
