Citizen Ruth
Ruth Stoops (Laura Dern) is homeless and addicted to solvents. When she is arrested, it is discovered that she is pregnant. The judge accuses her of “endangering unborn life” and suggests she have an abortion. When this becomes known, she is caught up in a relentless power struggle between abortion opponents and supporters, who want to use Ruth as a mouthpiece for their respective points of view. Inspired by a true story, Alexander Payne's directorial debut is a cheeky and quick-witted social satire that takes an equally sharp-tongued approach to both sides of the abortion debate. At the center of the conflict, Laura Dern is convincing as a lanky “white trash” outsider who unabashedly and flightily defends her own interests against all attempts to co-opt her. (T.W.)
