"Imagine me and you...": Derived from the irresistible Sixties pop hit by The Turtles, the title of *Happy Together* is pure irony. Two men from Hong Kong in Argentina, their relationship crumbling, one meets a young Taiwanese man. A topsy-turvy world: the Asian homeland is turned upside down in a counter-shot, an antipodal image of the attempt to come together – and its failure. A star vehicle for Hong Kong icons Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung Chiu-wai (as well as Taiwan pop star Chang Chen), but the true superstar is director Wong Kar-wai, just on the verge of reaching a top position in the A-festival league. It is not the plot or the drama that shapes the theme of his film, but the style influenced by Manuel Puig. Shifting narrators, speed changes in Christopher Doyle's frenetic sequences, shifts from color to black-and-white: forms of separation, translated into perfected mannerism. (Christoph Huber)
