Carretera a Gusen – Weg nach Gusen
Àlex Cirera Izquierdo (49 years old), father of two, fireman by profession and amateur cyclist, has been training for some time to embark alone on a physical and emotional journey that will take him more than 2000 kilometres from Catalonia to Austria.
Along the way, we discover the reason that led him to embark on this adventure: Félix Izquierdo García, his grandfather - who he had barely heard of in his family - was one of the many Spanish Republicans in exile who fell into the hands of the Nazis.
Àlex is obsessed with finding out who his grandfather was and what path he travelled, and he researches and collects information about Félix. He has even discovered some letters he wrote during his exile in France. Using these letters and other historical data, he reconstructs his grandfather's journey from his exile in 1939 to the place of his murder, the Gusen concentration camp.
Àlex will cycle the route his grandfather travelled 80 years ago. With this journey, Àlex wants to get closer to the person his grandfather was, honour him and show that even after so many years, there are still hidden family stories that have emerged from the Spanish war, exile and the long Franco dictatorship.
Produced by the Amical de Mauthausen (Association of Friends of Mauthausen, other camps and all Spanish victims of National Socialism), the film was supported by various institutions: Gobierno de Aragón (Government of Aragón), Memorial Democràtic de Catalunya (Democratic Memorial of Catalonia), Diputació de Barcelona (Barcelona Provincial Council), Ajuntament de Terrassa (Terrassa Town Council).
It is one of several projects that the Amical de Mauthausen is developing to fulfil one of its main objectives: To preserve the memory of the deportation of Spanish Republicans to Nazi camps during the Second World War.
Through this personal story, the Amical de Mauthausen aims to show how the suffering of the victims persists over time, seeking the sympathy of the viewer.
