Captain Volkonogov Escaped

Saint Petersburg, 1938: Captain Fyodor Volkonogov (Yuri Borisov, known from the successful Finnish film PART NO. 6) is part of a task force of the national security service under Stalin. As part of the "Great Purges", the team interrogates, tortures and kills potential opponents of the regime. Fyodor also got his hands dirty with innocent people. When the state subjects him and his comrades to strict scrutiny, he flees. The ghost of a dead friend appears to him and warns him of the hell that awaits all sinners. However, there is one last chance: if Fyodor finds forgiveness from even one of his victims' relatives, he may yet go to heaven. Hunted by Major Golovnja, who is suffering from lung disease, he embarks on a ludicrous odyssey through a city marked by destruction.

The regime-critical directing duo Natasa Merkulova and Aleksej Cupov's film is a bitterly funny swan song to the political methods of the Soviet Union.
