Retrospective
Camp de Thiaroye
On 1 December 1944, French troops in a camp near Dakar shoot at Senegalese soldiers who have just returned from the war because they are demanding fair pay. Sembène's reconstruction of this massacre becomes a lesson about barbarism and racism - and the first pan-African production to be made without European support. The film was banned for years in both Senegal and France. (Florian Widegger)
