California Split
Part of the special series MANY VOICES - 100 YEARS OF ROBERT ALTMAN
Charlie Waters: Do you always take a big win this hard?
Bill Denny: Charlie, there was no special feeling in it. I just said there was.
Charlie Waters: Yeah, I know that. Everybody knows that. Don't mean a fucking thing, does it?
Charlie Waters (Elliott Gould) seems to spend his time on earth almost exclusively in casinos, on racetracks and in poker halls. Bill Denny at least has a proper job as a newspaper editor during the day. What unites them is their addiction to gambling. Whether this involves established forms of organised gambling or small, drunken bets on who can name more of the seven dwarves is irrelevant. Equally irrelevant seems to be the question of whether one is indulging in a playfully charming virus or is confronted with the consequences of gambling addiction in the form of unyielding believers. Both could be satisfied with a single evening in which luck strikes.
