Chief Inspector Stephan Derrick has been investigating Derrick on ZDF for almost a quarter of a century and the series is the best-selling in German television history. It often turns out to be somewhat sedate, but Brynych brings the drive: disco girl meets stuttering industrialist's son - instead of a love story, it's all about power, millions and murder. DER ALTE is the spiritual successor to KOMMISSARS: in Simenon style, the series attempts to shed more light on the milieu and people in just under 60 minutes than to be as spectacular as possible. A pub, saturated with smoke and alcohol, becomes the scene of a crime when, after a heated argument with the landlord, his wife goes missing the next day.
