Dean: Baby, you made a promise to me, okay? You said, “for better or worse.” You said that. You said it. It was a promise.
Cindy: I'm sorry.

Blue Valentine by Derek Cianfrance is a chronicle of love – its emergence and its decline. Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams), played with almost documentary intensity, encounter each other in flashbacks full of tenderness and present-day scenes full of alienation. The film shows not escalation, but erosion: how closeness turns into distance.

The plot alternates between two time periods: the beginning of the relationship—a chance encounter, their first evenings together, the pregnancy, and the seemingly rational decision to stay together—and the state of affairs years later, marked by routine, disappointment, and a lack of communication. Dean works as a painter, Cindy as a nurse; their ideas about the future and family are worlds apart. A night together in a motel is supposed to save what has long since crumbled. Only the flashbacks reveal what once was.
