Blue (Live-Performance)

FromDerek Jarman

Year1993

Duration79min.

LanguageEnglish

Jarman's magical meditation on mortality is also his most radical undertaking in terms of form: a ‘feature film’ that is far removed from the cinematic. Instead, the screen is filled with a constant colour: the deep blue shade ‘International Klein Blue’, which Jarman first encountered in 1974 at the Tate Gallery in London in an Yves Klein exhibition. Almost two decades later, when Jarman was temporarily blinded by his HIV infection, he could only perceive ultramarine tones reminiscent of Klein. The azure blue screen is counterpointed by an eclectic soundtrack of music, sounds and voices (in the live performance, the soundtrack is performed live in a different constellation). Premiered simultaneously on British television and radio in September 1993—five months before Jarman's death—Blue is a complex philosophical and political legacy whose very existence stands as an inspiring monument to an unshakeable artistic spirit of contradiction.
