Bitter Gold
Seventeen-year-old Carola and her single father Pacífico run an illegal mine in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. Their everyday life is shaped by hard labor, yet they dream of a better life by the coast. The two also guard a dangerous secret: a hidden gold vein that they secretly mine at night, hoping it will make their dream come true. But when an accident leaves Pacífico seriously injured, Carola must suddenly take responsibility and stand up against discrimination and hostility.
Director Juan Olea’s atmospheric neo-Western plays with contrasts: the endless vastness of the Chilean desert and the claustrophobic narrowness of the mine. The breathtaking landscape shots and striking visual compositions are the work of renowned cinematographer Sergio Armstrong. Newcomer Katalina Sánchez impresses in this feminist drama with charismatic presence and remarkable determination.
“Highly suspenseful and featuring magnificent landscape shots.” (ZDF)
