Big Trouble in Little China
John Carpenter is rightly regarded as a master of action and horror, but he was also a comedy specialist who knew how to use black humour and visual gags to great effect. With its rebellious mix of urban fantasy, martial arts and crude humour, Big Trouble in Little China remains his magnum opus in comedy. The script, which was rewritten several times due to studio intervention, depicts a chaotic descent into hell in a mysterious parallel world in San Francisco's Chinatown. For Carpenter, this was just an excuse to create breathtaking baroque scenes through which Kurt Russell marches with the immortal line ‘I was born ready’. A cult classic. (J.M.)
