Betânia
After her husband’s death, 65-year-old Betânia, the matriarch of her family, returns to the remote village of her youth, set on the edge of Brazil’s desert landscape near the Amazon, in the state of Maranhão. Here, she confronts a life where tradition and modernity clash, as financial hardship, polluted waters, and intergenerational tensions shape everyday existence. Betânia and her family struggle to preserve their unity, heritage, and deep-rooted ties to their land. Inspired by the real-life challenges faced by villages on the fringes of the expanding desert in Lençóis, this feature film weaves together ecological and social themes with profound sensitivity.
