Enrico Berlinguer, the charismatic General Secretary of the Italian Communist Party (PCI), distanced himself from Soviet-influenced socialism in the early 1970s and attempted to reconcile it with Western ideas of democracy. In a world divided into two blocs, he campaigned vigorously to overcome the dogmas of the Cold War. Against all odds, he began a dialogue with Aldo Moro, the leader of the Christian Democrats. And had he not been murdered by the Red Brigades, Berlinguer could have changed Italy forever with his ‘historic compromise’.

Berlinguer, played masterfully by Elio Germano, still impresses today with his political foresight and his personal willingness to make sacrifices. Supplemented with impressive archive images, "Berlinguer. La grande ambizione" by Andrea Segre is not only a moving drama about one man's fight for a fairer society, but also a great portrait of an era characterised by hopes and disappointments.
