While Trenker, as lead actor, writer and co-director, deals with his own experiences as a soldier in the midst of the gruelling war of position, this film was made under extreme conditions (54 days of shooting in the high mountains at below 20 degrees below zero) and is now considered the first of its kind to refer to contemporary historical events.
