Beloved Tropic
The Colombian migrant Ana María is pregnant and trying to build a life in Panama City. With the prospect of finally obtaining her passport, she takes a job as a 24-hour caregiver: she is to look after the wealthy Mercedes, who suffers from Dementia. Marked by her illness, Mercedes initially behaves with suspicion and rejection. But through her respectful and sensitive manner, Ana María gradually earns her trust.
The two very different women spend much of their time in a tropical garden paradise and slowly develop a friendship. However, during Mercedes’ birthday celebration, uncomfortable truths suddenly come to light.
In her feature film debut, Panamanian director Ana Endara invites the audience into a distinctly female universe, telling — through sensual imagery and great empathy — a story of intergenerational friendship, female solidarity, and the challenging realities of dementia and unfulfilled desire for children. In the leading roles of this quiet, nuanced drama, renowned Chilean actress Paulina García and emerging Colombian talent Jenny Navarrete deliver remarkable performances.
“A tender, subtle, and daring debut film.” (Jury statement, Arthouse Cinema Award)
