Belén
Argentina, 2014. A young woman is admitted to a provincial hospital in Tucumán with severe abdominal pain and undergoes emergency surgery. Hours later, the patient—allegedly pregnant—is arrested at her hospital bed: she is accused of having terminated her pregnancy, an act that was punishable under Argentine law at the time. Lawyer Soledad Deza becomes aware of the case and begins investigating with her all-female legal team. It soon becomes clear that “Belén,” a pseudonym, has been wrongfully imprisoned. Despite receiving death threats, Soledad fights relentlessly to overturn the verdict and secure Belén’s release. She is supported by thousands of women who take to the streets of Argentina in a wave of outrage to protest this injustice.
Director Dolores Fonzi brings this true and shocking court case to the screen—based on the book Somos Belén by Ana Correa—while also playing the lead role herself. This gripping and important film about the movement that ultimately led to the legalization of abortion in Argentina tells a story of courage in the face of structural violence against women and of the collective power to bring about social change.
“A powerful, inspiring feminist drama.” (Screen Daily)
