‘Liebesnacht, Du schöne Nacht’ from Hoffmann's tales as the leitmotif of a game of chance in the Venetian carnival: womaniser Colloredo bets that he can seduce Giacinta, the chaste wife of the Mexican Zubaran, in just one night. The proof would be her medallion and the stakes would be a duel in which the winner would have the first shot. Love, happiness and death characterise the atmosphere in the lagoon city as fate is decided. (Brigitte Mayr)
