In his collage about one of the most horrific massacres—in which more than 33,000 Jews were murdered over two days outside Kyiv—Loznitsa lets the images of the time speak for themselves: the advance of the Wehrmacht, abandoned villages, burned-out cities; later, the recapture by the Red Army, interrogations, verdicts. The carefully restored footage does not present a linear sequence of events, but rather a web of traces in which the unimaginable only gradually begins to emerge.
