An Errand
Moroy, as we learn right at the beginning of the film, is lucky to have a job as a chauffeur for a shady boss, whose business dealings we get some dark forebodings about as the story progresses. But now the boss is in a hotel somewhere in Baguio with his lover, and Moroy is supposed to drive to Manila to pick up a T-shirt. An absurd assignment like so many of his boss's, which Moroy carries out with stoic equanimity. During the lonely car ride, Moroy's thoughts begin to wander, and so his life unfolds before our astonished eyes piece by piece, ellipse by ellipse - a narrative as suspenseful as a thriller, about parallel worlds in which boss and chauffeur go in and out, including reflections on Moroy's working conditions. What makes the film so special, however, is the absolute stringency with which the chauffeur's perspective is pursued - or should we say solidarity?
