The descendants of the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians, who are now displaced to reservations, still remember the Salton Sea in southern California as their livelihood. Now intensive farming based on monocultures dominates, the lake is in danger of disappearing and the soil is contaminated with uranium. The USA tested numerous nuclear bombs here in the final stages of the Second World War and during the Cold War.
Lukas Marxt and Vanja Smiljanić examine the historical entanglements of the land around the Salton Sea, shaped by indigenous culture, military exercises and climate change. They accompany the protagonists through the landscape and show the abstruseness of the effects of human activity on themselves and the environment in memorable images.
