When Bret Easton Ellis' novel American Psycho hit like a bomb when it was published in 1991, the dismantling of the classic Wall Street yuppie of the cool 1980s began. For a long time, the material was considered unfilmable. As Patrick Bateman, the slick flipside of the ‘American Dream’, Christian Bale embodies a bloodthirsty monster who destroys everything that does not conform to his ideas. With his rapidly increasing drug consumption and imagined offences towards him, the boundaries between dream and reality become increasingly blurred for Bateman until he can no longer remember how many women he has slept with or how many people he has massacred. Mary Harron's American Psycho is a study of superficiality fuelled by irony and abysmal wit and shows a deeply narcissistic character who falls victim to male drives and compulsions. (E.S.)
